 GFW (Glasgow Folkmusic Workshop)

GFW (Glasgow Folkmusic Workshop), is a community music organisation based in Glasgow. It was founded over 30 years ago to teach Scottish fiddle music (its first incarnation was as the Glasgow Fiddle Workshop). Over the years it added other classes and now, while fiddle is still the largest element, GFW teaches classes in mandolin, whistle, guitar, banjo, ukulele, cello, and others.

I've been teaching at GFW for 20 years, and as a senior tutor, I am responsible for guiding and shaping the classes, liaising with and advising the tutors, and communicating with the GFW board.I currently have two musical activities with the GFW:

  • GFW Improvers Mandolin Class

I've been at the helm of the improving mandolin players' class for the past few years, helping countless fledgeling musicians through an important part of their journey. I define "improvers" as those who have completed a beginners' class, or who have played for a year or two. Click here for further details.

  • GFW Monday Slow Session

For many years I have conducted a slow session before the GFW Monday evening classes. I put together a repertoire of tunes which are accessible, with soundfiles and notation sheets available where appropriate. Click here for further details.
