Halloween

Music

Violet Jacob (1863-1946) was a Scots poet from near Montrose. The Dundee folksinger Jim Reid (1934-2009), who previously had success by putting music to another of her poems, The Wild Geese, applied the same treatment to her poem Halloween. Violet lost her only son Harry at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, from which she never really recovered, and which had a profound influence on some of her work.
