The melody was composed in 1945 by Joseph Kosma, a Hungarian living in Paris. The original French lyrics were by Jacques Prevert, and in 1950 Johnny Mercer wrote English lyrics. It subsequently became a hugely popular song, becoming a jazz stand as well.
