This is a good example of how popular melodies enter the folk traditions. Down in the Old Cherry Orchard was released in 1907 on sheet music and by Frederic Rose on an Edison wax cylinder the same year. The lyrics were written by Alfred Bryan and the music by S R Henry. The main tune on the sheet is how the tune is often played nowadays in old time circles, while the second version is the chorus of the song as published in 1907.
