The source for all modern versions of this tune is from a 1968 recording by the Hollow Rock String Band. Their fiddler Alan Jabbour collected it from Henry Reed (1884-1968). There are some theories that the tune is descended from the air of an old British ballad, Eggs and Marrowbones (but I don’t hear the connection).
