The title of this traditional Russian folksong translates as "The Long Road". The first known recording of the song was by Alexander Vertinsky in the 1920s, and it became wider known when it was used in the 1958 film The Brothers Karamazov. The melody was re-used in the early 60s with a new set of lyrics, "Those Were the Days" written by Gene Raskin. Somebody suggested the song to Paul McCartney, who produced a version for Mary Hopkin which was a worldwide hit.
This set and other tunes from around the world can be accessed from the World Music Collection index.
