Scottish Folk Groups
The Laggan
The stalwart of The Laggan, singer Arthur Johnstone, formed the first incarnation of The Laggan as a trio in the mid-1960s. Another of the members was Les "Spike" Milligan and they recorded an album in about 1967.
The second and longer lasting group was formed in 1971 and featured Arthur on vocals, Billy Patton (fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo), Tony Patton (guitar, mandolin) and John McDermott (banjo, harmonica). Another early member was guitarist Brian Miller who later became involved with
The Occasionals and many other groups. Arthur Johnstone also started the Star Folk Club. Tony Patton now stays in Ballybofey, Donegal, and often plays on a Saturday night with his brother Billy. Their parents were from Castlefin, and returned to Ireland from Glasgow when they retired.
