Bill Hardie

Bill Hardie (1916- 1995) from Aberdeen came from a dynasty of Scottish fiddlers, his great-great-grandfather Peter Hardie having been taught by the legendary Niel Gow in the eighteenth century. Back in 1755, Matthew Hardie practiced the art of fiddle-making and passed on these skills to his son Thomas Hardie and his cousin Peter Hardie. Peter had lived in the Dunkeld area of Perthshire, and was a favourite pupil of the famous Niel Gow. Peter in turn taught his own grandson James Hardie, whose fiddles received critical acclaim. James's brother Charles Hardie (1849-1893) was regarded as one of the best fiddlers in the Scotland of his day.
Bill Hardie's style was very much rooted in the North-East of Scotland, and is influenced by fellow Aberdonians JF Dickie and J Murdoch Henderson. His son Alastair Hardie is also a fiddle player, and has recorded a few albums of Scottish fiddle music.Bill Hardie was born into the celebrated Hardie family who have been at the centre of Scottish fiddling for two hundred years, and was hailed as a supreme example of the North-East style.
