Hector the Hero was written by the famed fiddler James Scott Skinner (1843-1927) in honour of Hector MacDonald (1853-1903), who was regarded as a hero by many in Scotland because he rose through the ranks from a Private to become a Major General, and won several distinctions including the KCB and the DSO.
The tune is a popular one, and ideal for the whistle. Being a slow air, you can introduce some of the decorations you've learnt (slides, cuts, trills, etc).
