In about 1787, Burns heard a minister - Mr Clunie - sing Ca' the Ewes to the Knowes, supposed to have been written by Isabel Pagan of Muirkirk. He added some verses and sent it to be published in Johnson's Scots Musical Museum. Seven years later he wrote another song on the same theme and tune, Ca' the Yowes.
