Nathaniel Gow composed Caller Herrin', influenced by the cries of Newhaven fishwives selling their wares on the streets of Edinburgh, and he also incorporated the bells of St Andrew's Church. Carolina Oliphant - Lady Nairne - heard the tune and wrote lyrics to it, and it became one of Scotland's most popular songs.
