I always wondered where the title Davie Davie Knock Knack came from, then I found out there was a Scottish children's rhyme which went "Neevie, neevie, knick knack, which one shall ye tak'" which involved putting your neeve (fist) in with everyone else's and counting out. This is very similar to the more well-known "one potato, two potato" game to determine who will be "het".
