The composer of these tunes, Robert Mackintosh (c1745-1807) from Tullymet, Perthshire, was regarded as one of Niel Gow's great rivals, and indeed taught fiddle to Gow's son Nathaniel. As a musician and composer, Mackintosh occupied an exalted position.
