This set was put together to comemmorate St Leonard, the patron saint of Fife. Leonard was born towards the end of the 5th century near Orleans, France. He was the son of a nobleman, but at the age of 14 he entered a monastery. As a result of the fame he acquired after healing the sick, many monasteries, churches and hospitals were dedicated to him, including the Hospital of St Leonard, which provided shelter to pilgrims visiting the shrine of St Andrew. In 1512 the building was used for the founding of St Leonard’s College, part of St Andrews University. St Leonard died on 6th November 559.
