This is a very popular hornpipe across the British Isles and America, known in many settings since the 18th century. A number of people have been suggested as its composer including Johann Christian Fischer (1733-1800) and James A Fishar, but no definitive information exists. It was first published in Scotland in 1784 under the title West's Hornpipe.
