Father John MacMillan of Barra was composed by Norman MacDonald, who lived next door to a relative of Fr John. Once, when the latter was visiting, MacDonald played a new tune to him. He liked it so much he was honoured by having the tune named for him. The tune became popular with pipers, dance bands and sessioneers.
