Short Coated Mary seems to have been a popular tune at one time. It appears to come from the Western Highland and Islands, but I really don't know much about its background or history. I have been told that the term "short-coated" once signified a woman of loose morals: "Aye, she's a bit short-coated, ye ken whit I mean?" - but I can't verify that.
