The composer of Summertime, George Gershwin (1898-1937), wanted to write a piece in the style of the spirituals popular among the African American communities. With lyrics by DuBose Heyward, it was used in the opera Porgy and Bess in 1935. It was made into a film in 1959 starring Dorothy Dandridge and Sidney Poitier.
