April 6th 1320: the Declaration of Arbroath. The Declaration was King Robert I's response to being excommunicated, and to assert Scotland's status as an independent sovereign state. As a result, Robert's excommunication was rescinded, and the Pope recognised him as the King of Scotland.
Both of these tunes come from a single piece called The Declaration of Arbroath, composed by Michael Bennett for brass bands. I have adapted them for the purposes of a mixed instrument class. Bennett based the jig on O'er the Water to Charlie.
