Miss Margaret Gordon was the only surviving daughter of Rear Admiral William Gordon and his wife Elizabeth Forbes. William Marshall dedicated this tune to her (It was originally called Miss Admiral Gordon's).

Robert Burns loved Marshall's tunes, and chose this one to pen a tribute to his wife Jean Armour in 1788.
