Music

The Scottish poet James Hogg - the "Ettrick Shepherd" - was born in 1770 and worked as a farmhand and shepherd in Selkirkshire in the Scottish Borders. In 1801 he was recruited to collect ballads for Sir Walter Scott, and eventually became his emanuensis. In 1810 Hogg moved to Edinburgh to pursue his literary career, becoming one of the most respected writers of his day. He wrote lyrics (and sometimes music) to many songs, including the Lament of Flora MacDonald and Bauldy Fraser (to the tune The Whigs of Fife).
