Turlough O'Carolan
Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738)  Tunes by Carolan

Turlough O'Carolan was an Irish harper, born in County Westmeath, later moving to Roscommon. He lost his sight when he was 18 from smallpox, and was apprenticed to a harper. When he was 21 he was given a horse and a guide, and travelled Ireland composing songs for the gentry of the day.

There is not an awful lot known about Carolan's life, but the fact that many of his compositions are still being played around the world is a restament to how much they appeal to musicians. There is something unique about the tunes which is very difficult to replicate. Some of his tunes are listed on the right.
