Robert Burns is one of the most famous poets in history and an icon of Scotland throughout the world. Born in poverty in Ayrshire, Burns was educated by his father and laboured on the family farm. In his life a worked variously as a farm labourer, a flax-dresser and an exciseman.
Burns was passionate about Scottish culture, particularly folk song and music. He played the fiddle, but he will always be remembered for the hundreds of Scots songs he collected and preserved. He also wrote lyrics to existing tunes and many of these are still sung today. While he never acrtually composed any music, many tunes are strongly associated with Burns because of his words. Some of these are listed on the right.
