Phil Cunningham was born in Edinburgh in 1960, learning accordion as a boy, while his brother Johnny learned fiddle. At age 16, Phil followed Johnny into the successful folk group Silly Wizard and recorded a number of albums with them. Later he was involved with the group Relativity.
In the 1990s he started a long and fruitful partnership with the Shetland fiddler Aly Bain, resulting in many tours and several albums.
Phil has always composed, and many of his tunes have been taken up by other musicians and played in session all over the world. Some of these tunes are listed on the right.
