William's Ghost/The Cock Laird

William's Ghost
This set is part of the following collections:

Music

Both of these tunes were at one time - in the early 18th Century - believed to have been composed by David Rizzio, Mary Queen of Scots' secretary who was brutally murdered on 9th March 1566. There was never really any evidence for this, apart from the fact that he was a skilled musician. The claims have not been taken seriously for a long time now. William's Ghost is here taken from McGibbon's Collection (1742), and The Cock Laird comes from Oswald's Caledonian Companion (1744).
