Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where are the classes?
Since the first lockdown I have conducted many of my classes online, and in April 2022 I took the difficult decision to discontinue the live clases in Edinburgh. The factors which led to this decision include my age, rising costs across the board, and the changing geography of the class participants.

  • What I need?
An instrument, music for the class and the term, a pencil. For mandolins and ukuleles a tuner is useful, and for mandolins, a plectrum is essential.

  • Where would I get a mandolin?
Your nearest music shop is a good place to start and ask for advice. They usually have a range of instruments to suit every budget.

  • What does "NGMS" stand for?
Many years ago I taught mandolin classes with the Scots Music Group in Edinburgh. When they cancelled the classes I took the scary step of starting my own classes. I hired a church hall in Edinburgh and founded Nigel Gatherer's Mandolin School. When I added whistle classes to my catalogue, this changed to Nigel Gatherer's Music School (NGMS).
