Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where are the classes?
Since the first lockdown I have conducted many of my classes online, and in April 2022 I took the difficult decision to discontinue the live clases in Edinburgh. The factors which led to this decision include my age, rising costs across the board, and the changing geography of the class participants.

  • How do I do "online" classes?
The online classes are facilitated by an application called Zoom. It's free, easy to install and easy to use. If you don't already have it, go to one of my class pages, click on the button which says "Join Class," and you will be asked if you wish to download Zoom; agree and soon you'll be ready to get started.

  • What I need?
An instrument, music for the class and the term, a pencil. For mandolins and ukuleles a tuner is useful, and for mandolins, a plectrum is essential.

  • Where would I get my instrument?
Your nearest music shop is a good place to start and ask for advice. They usually have a range of instruments to suit every budget.

  • How do I pay for classes?
On each class page there will be an explanation of how to pay.

  • What does "NGMS" stand for?
Many years ago I taught mandolin classes with the Scots Music Group in Edinburgh. When they cancelled the classes I took the scary step of starting my own classes. I hired a church hall in Edinburgh and founded Nigel Gatherer's Mandolin School. When I added whistle and ukulele classes to my catalogue, this changed to Nigel Gatherer's Music School (NGMS).
